About MACH Family Residency Program

Since 1972, Martin Army Community Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program has produced well rounded, board-certified Soldier Physicians who lead Army Medicine. Located at Maneuver Center of Excellence, Ft. Benning, the program's physicians proudly care for Active Duty, Retired and Veteran Service Members as well as their Families. Our program is an unopposed 8-9-9 program that provides a wide variety of services that are a perfect fit for training in Family Medicine.

The Residency is an official teaching hospital for USUHS (Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland) and frequently hosts both active duty medical students as well as students from other medical schools. The majority of Residents are either USUHS graduates or HPSP graduates. Applicants for residency training must have been accepted for a military commission prior to applying for residency.

Create a professional, evidence-based learning experience for primary care military physicians by teaching and modeling comprehensive patient and family centered care utilizing the Army Medical Home standard. Each physician-Soldier we graduate will be competent to provide medical expertise in support of Warriors and their families under any contingency.

Family Medical Home/Family Medicine Clinic

Our outpatient family medicine clinic is a state of the art primary care clinic that provides full spectrum care from newborns to the elderly patient. Our clinic is composed of a team based approach in which our residents consistently work with the same ancillary staff and faculty in order to provided streamlined care. We are on the cutting edge of developing a system that is patient and family centered. Our clinic utilizes an electronic medical record system that has been recently updated to include the use of Dragon Naturally Speaking software and wireless notebooks that allows providers to dictate their encounters. In the Family Medicine Clinic our residents get relevant procedural training.

Procedures include but are not limited to the following:

  • NST
  • Limited OB ultrasound
  • Cryotherapy
  • Skin biopsy
  • Excision of skin lesions
  • Colposcopy
  • Pulmonary Function Testing
  • Treadmill Stress Testing
  • Vasectomy
  • Long-acting reversible contraceptices (LARC)

Geriatrics

Our Geriatrics program is run by a fellowship trained geriatrician and includes comprehensive assessments of geriatric patients in outpatient, inpatient, long-term care facility, and home. These comprehensive visits cover the patient's overall health, mental health, cognition, and daily activities assessments.

Inpatient Medicine Service

Our inpatient medicine service consists of our general medicine floor and a 7 bed ICU. Currently our medicine team is composed of 3 residents during the day and night float with 2 residents. A variety of diagnoses are admitted and treated giving our residents a broad exposure to internal medicine cases. The family medicine teaching faculty and internal medicine service provide faculty coverage for this service.

Maternal/Child Service

The maternal/child service (MCS) consists of antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care as well as pediatric inpatient service. L&D, affectionately referred to as “the deck” by our residents, consists of 5 delivery rooms, 1 PACU, 1 Antepartum, 2 Triage, and an operating suite. Teams of residents cover primary services for all women that come to the hospital for evaluation after 20 weeks gestation.

Our residents consistently surpass requirements of the Residency Review Committee for number of total plus continuity deliveries. Residents additionally get adequate training in obstetrical emergencies through the ALSO course and teaching opportunities that arise during labor management. A resident is always 1st assist in operative deliveries, and some residents are trained as primary surgeons by our staff OB/GYN’s in operative delivery.

Residents follow the mother and baby couplet they deliver in the Mother Baby Unit. Residents become proficient in routine and complicated postpartum care of mothers and of the neonate. This service is jointly staffed by our OB/GYN and Pediatrics departments.

During the first year our residents also get further neonatal experience at a local (NICU) where they become familiarized with advanced care of the neonate to include intubation and basic ventilator management. Residents get further pediatric experience on our Pediatrics outpatient rotation.

SIM Center

The Simulation Center is a new feature of our hospital and residency program. The SIM Center is a state of the art trainer with the most advanced training capabilities in the Columbus area. Currently the SIM Center has: · SIM man · Trauma mannequin · NOELLE birthing trainer · Endoscopy trainers · New-B infant simulator · Modalities to for central line placement, suturing training, injections, and other procedures

Sports Medicine Clinic

In the sports medicine clinic residents learn of the integration of the soldier, especially the infantryman (11B), into Sports Medicine as a "Soldier-Athlete". Care of family members and student athletes is another important focus of the curriculum. This rotation will be supervised by the Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician(s) at MACH. During this rotation common sports injuries and military specific injuries will be addressed. Residents get advanced training in intra-articular injections. Opportunities to participate in team sports and community sports medicine needs are available for anyone with particular interest in sports medicine.
