Soldier Recovery Unit: Graduating with Honors

By Jane Lee, Martin Army Community Hospital

Staff Sgt. Kevin Reese epitomizes the saying “It’s never too late.” The 57-year-old assigned to Ft. Benning’s Soldier Recovery Unit graduated magna cum laude from American Military University which is a member of the accredited American Public University System on October 1. To receive his degree “with great distinction” Reese maintained a 3.4+ GPA.

This is the non-commissioned officer’s second college degree. Reese started pursuing his interdisciplinary studies degree with a focus on education and sciences in 2012. He hopes his dedication and hard work to achieve his goals will help motivate others to do the same.

Reese is no stranger to adversity. While on active duty and studying online, he injured his neck and back at Ft. Bliss. This led to behavioral and physical complications which required him to be medevaced to Ft. Benning for surgery in October 2018.

His recovery at Benning’s SRU allowed Reese to never leave things undone. Even though he just graduated magna cum laude, he is not resting on his laurels. Now, Reese is only one semester away from obtaining his elementary K-8 education degree. The Mobile, Alabama native plans to return to his hometown to share his love of science with future generations.
